How I found out and spilled the beans...

About Mid-July, Phillip and I decided that perhaps we would "try", fully anticipating that this period of "trying" could very well take anywhere from 6 months to a year before we might be successful.  We sort of jokingly said that if it didn't work for August, we would have to wait until next summer, to be certain we wouldn't end up with a harvest baby.  So being the Obstretical nurse I am, I used the "wheel of fortune" to figure out dates and things of that nature to attempt to plan everything out just perfectly.  When the time was right, we tried.  Phillip told me everyday not to get my hopes up, but we prayed every night that whatever God's plan may be, that we see it through.  The Monday before I was to start my period, I was just too curious, so without Phillip knowing, I went to Wal Mart and purchased three different kinds of pregnancy tests.  I didn't feel any different at all, truth be told, I thought there was no chance it worked.  Tuesday morning, August 17th, I woke up after Phillip had already left for work and peed on the strip.  The test said to wait 3 minutes before reading, almost immediately it read positive!  Sneebie was the only one I shared the news with, he and I danced around the living room (he probably thought mommy was crazy!), and I let him enjoy one of his most favorite treats, a cigar :)  I repeated taking 2 more home pregnancy tests on Wednesday and Thursday, on Friday I went to Dr. Kauffman's office and had a blood test ran called an HCG Quantitative Test.  The results came back at 520 (about 100 points high, but definitely pregnant) normal numbers are 5-426 for 4 weeks pregnant.  I had gotten Sam's phone number (one of the newer guys Phillip had hired at the elevator in Salina), and texted him, I needed wheat for my project -- how to tell Phillip.

In preparation for all of this, I had purchased the book What to Expect Before You're Expecting.  As I flipped through the pages about home pregnancy tests, I couldn't believe what I read.  The oldest form of home pregnancy test included peeing on wheat.  If the wheat sprouted (which only takes a few days) it is positive, this dates back to 1350 BC and when tested today is over 70% accurate!  When Phillip and I were doing some reading, I shared this with him, which of course he was immensely impressed by.  So I knew what I had to do... I had to sprout wheat (and no I wasn't going to pee on it).  I found instructions online for how to sprout wheat and by Friday, sure enough I had a mason jar full of little sprouted wheat berries.  I chose just one and placed it in a jewelry box with a few other pieces of unsprouted wheat.

When Phillip came home that Friday evening, he was exhausted, it had been a long crazy week.  I pulled him into the kitchen and opened the box, I was SOOO excited to FINALLY share this news with him that I had kept secret since Tuesday, and said, "I've been growing this sprout all week" while pointing to my tummy.  He knew immediately and said, "You're kidding me, right?"  He was so happy, shocked, but happy.
